Der Erfolg der Serien Rc1 – Rc4 beruht auf der ASEA Thyristor-Technik, die seit den 1960er Jahren im schwedischen Lokomotivbau angewandt wurde. Von 1967 bis 1982 wurden insgesamt 265 Maschinen in Dienst gestellt. Mit 130 Exemplaren war die vierte Serie die größte dieser Lokbaureihe.
Bei der Aufteilung der Schwedischen Staatsbahn in verschiedene Geschäftsbereiche zum 1. Januar 2001 kamen alle noch vorhandenen Rc4 zu Green Cargo und werden nur noch im Güterverkehr eingesetzt.
